Back to Back-to-the-Land?A cousin of mine, who happens to be an economist, is concerned about his daughter's job prospects. She's 24, fresh out of graduate school, smart as a whip, and can't find a job in her field. She hopes to teach English, but the best gig she's found so far is as a camp counselor, and that will soon end. She's looking into working abroad. That made me wonder: Would such capable young people, if shut out of the job market for long enough, take matters into their own hands and build their own alternative economies, as some of their parents did in the back-to-the-land movement of the 1960s and 1970s?... Tom Hinerfeld elected president of A+D MuseumIn the sad aftermath of the death of Stephen Kanner, FAIA, president and co-founder of L.A.'s A+D Museum, the museum's board was confronted with the task of electing a new president. They chose Tom Hinerfeld, president and founder of Hinerfeld-Ward Inc., one of the area's best general contractors. Hinerfeld has been closely involved with the museum since its beginnings, and he recently oversaw the construction of its first permanent home, which opened in April. When I spoke with him earlier this week, he used a construction metaphor to describe the task of leading the previously nomadic museum in its new, rent-paying phase. Innovative housing conference starts tomorrowLawrence Scarpa, FAIA, will give a public keynote speech on July 21 at the inaugural Affordable Housing Design Leadership Institute in Minneapolis. The Institute was the brainchild of Scarpa and former NEA design director Maurice Cox, who teamed with Enterprise Community Partners' Katie Swenson to make their idea a reality. ...
