Designed to be the hub as well as the centerpiece of a large suburban home, this stylish kitchen connects to all the major rooms in the house—living room, dining room, family room—plus the breakfast and mud rooms.

The kitchen's tailored good looks make it a worthy focal point. Architect Adolfo Perez lined the 900-square-foot space with sleek, steamed beech-veneer cabinets and brushed stainless-steel appliances. They're set off by brown granite countertops and a black slate floor. At the center of the room, a mezza luna-shaped island does triple duty as the cooking station, prep surface, and high and low snack bar.

Perez didn't want to lose wall-cabinet storage to windows, so he captured the sun with an octagonal breakfast room added off the west-facing kitchen. Surrounded with windows, it's the next best thing to eating alfresco on the adjacent bluestone terrace.
