This Cocoon9-designed 480-square-foot prefabricated studio in Southampton, N.Y., is aimed at the luxury market, offering the advantages of factory-built construction with an array of high-end finishes more common to site-built structures. It’s rendered as a simple box with vertical wood siding punctuated by 9-foot-tall floor-to-ceiling windows that make the small structure’s footprint feel far bigger than the limits of its own perimeter.

A combined kitchen/dining/living area sits at the center of the 40-foot-long pod, bookended by a bedroom at one end and a full bath at the other. A freestanding divider between the living and sleeping spaces holds an ethanol fireplace and a pivoting TV that can be seen from both “rooms.” Cabinetry provides storage and conceals furniture. Sustainable features include FSC-certified wood, LED lighting, and low-E glazing; solar or green roofs are options.

The designers see myriad uses for the unit, including as a primary residence, guest cottage, pool house, home office, artist studio, or a second home. And you could have your own customized unit brought to your front door: New York–based Cocoon9 can deliver the units anywhere in the U.S. within four months.

“There are a number of interior details that you wouldn’t expect to see in a modular studio that are very interesting.”
— Juror Katherine Hogan
